Kapture Review

Kapture is a mixture of games, taking inspiration from side scrolling shooters, Commando style combat action and you even get to drive a car. Does this game Kapture your imagination or is it best left on the drawing board?

You play the character of an agent who is ordered to track down and capture a very naughty man called Ozhaka. Your journey is set over seven missions; two in the air, two on foot and a final car chase. That is only five? you ask, you would be quite right because two missions are visiting a store to buy new weapons, shopping is such a chore…

Your first two missions have you in the pilot seat of a fighter plane. You must fly across the level and shoot the oncoming choppers, stealth bombers (I think) and little guys with rocket launchers (I think). You fly quite possibly the worst aircraft ever built as the controls are very sluggish and moving upwards or downwards takes forever. Dealing with other aircraft is a fairly easy task, but the rockets can be near impossible to avoid because your plane moves so slow. Combined with bullets appearing from outside the screen, it is very tricky to kill the shooter and it makes for a very unpleasant gaming experience.

If you survive the first two levels, you visit a store to purchase weapons for the following mission which is a Commando on foot style side scrolling shooter. The controls are more responsive and there is a little more fun than the previous levels but it suffers some problems. You can occasionally get stuck in the sandbags for a few seconds, waggling the joypad seems to untangle you. Again, enemies can fire from off screen, including above and below, which can make it very hard to progress. It was during the second foot mission that I had enough of the game. I have never stopped playing a game when writing a review so this was a first. If you are still interested, the final mission lets you drive a Jeep on a chase to capture Ozhaka. I played the driving game in the tutorial and it was very bad.

Graphically the game is very basic, there very little animation for the sprites which are not drawn well and backgrounds are bland. There are a few music tracks but are very short and loop. The idea of the game is a good one, combining three different styles of game play would make for a great game, but Kapture is simply badly made. With a bit more work the game could be improved to a playable level, but even then this game would be hard to recommend at 80 :MSPoints: as the game lasts around thirty minutes.
