Avatar Bumper Cars Review

Avatar Bumper Cars was released on the Xbox Live Indie Marketplace a few days ago, and it’s trying to bump its way into your game collection. If you’re curious about the game, read on and I’ll tell you about it.

First off, Avatar Bumper Cars supports 4 local players, or you can play against the computer itself on 4 difficulty levels. Sorry guys, Xbox Live multiplayer is not included in the game, and although it would have been a wonderful addition, we can survive without it. The game allows the player to choose from 5 arenas to play in, and while your choice doesn’t affect the gameplay, the change of appearance is more than welcome.

The game uses both the left and right triggers to move forward and in reverse, while using the left analogue to steer. If you make it to sudden death, you have a temporary boost option to get you that extra speed you may just need. In Avatar Bumper Cars, you goal is to be the last man [or woman] standing, and you take out your opponents by slamming the rear of their car with the spikes mounted on the front of your own. It’s a very simple concept, and in a 4 player match, it gets quite fun, and you’ll have a lot of laughs.

Visually, the game is decent, using a rather bright color scheme, and the style is similar to that of the old Clayfighter games.  Each level has some decor outside of the actual circular barriers on each course, such as sand castles and rainbow beach umbrellas on the beach course. Nothing spectacular, but we’re dealing with very small budget titles on the Indie scene and many games such as this one are developed by the hands of only one or two people.

The game has a basic soundtrack, featuring background music in-game as well as the bumping and popping sounds when you ram other players. However, you’re going to want to take advantage of custom soundtracks, and play along to something you enjoy, might I suggest Tom Cochrane’s “Life is a Highway”?

In the end, Avatar Bumper Cars is a fun title, with fast-paced local multiplayer, and it’s only going to run you the extremely affordable amount of 80 :MSPoints:. For the price, it’s a fun title to pick up and play for short periods of time, and a solid entry by developer, Torturas. Head out the Marketplace to get more information regarding this title.
