Towers Review

Tower Defense games have flooded the Indie game marketplace over the past year. Though there are still not many on the Live Arcade marketplace, few like Crystal Defenders and Defense Grid are. With so many Indie games to choose from, each game is going to have to redefine and perfect the tower defense genre.

The story of Towers is about wizards in the land of Sarcastia who all want to master casting the ultimate spell. They are unable to do this unless they gather all 20 crystals to one location. Each crystal, once touched, cannot emit power until the wizards can cast a spell which makes them vulnerable to attacks. As monsters begin to attack, the master wizard Elweiss sacrifices his life to protect the crystals. He then becomes a ghost who is determined to save the crystals from annihilation at any cost.

For those who are new to the tower defense scene, you must protect your home base which contains crystals. In order to protect your crystals, you build towers to attack the oncoming waves of monsters. Towers’ provides 8 different types of towers which you can use at your disposal. Each tower is upgradeable and has its own benefits to the playing field. For example, cannon tower will focus on a specific ground area in which it is stronger when compared to gun tower.

The graphics are fairly basic; the colors of the maps, characters, and the towers each have their own unique charm.  The songs in the game are soothing and fit the feel of the game.  The interface is simple and doesn’t overwhelm the screen. Each monsters health is displayed over their heads which makes it easy to distinguish who you should focus your attacks on. Your screen also shows your mana and what monsters will be coming next to help you prepare for future attacks. You also have the ability to fast forward the monsters if you wish, but it is wise to plan ahead before doing so.

Towers received a titled update which includes an easy to read tower guide and multiple difficulties. The game offers 20 different levels that encourage you to beat each level with all wizards surviving to unlock alternate game endings. The easy difficulty has 5 wizards, normal difficulty has 10, and tough difficulty has 20. You should always plan strategically because you have fewer wizards guarding the crystal on the easier difficulties. So if you want to see all endings you must be able to beat all levels on the higher difficulty, this is no easy feat, as the game is very difficult at later levels.

Towers’  is easily one of the most charming and challenging tower defense games on the indie marketplace. For only 80 :MSPoints: you are getting 20 levels which is a steal. Whether you’re a fan of these games or not, any who enjoy a challenge should definitely check this game out.

More information on Towers as well as the trial and full versions of the game can be found on the Marketplace.
