The Quest For Freshness Review

The Quest For Freshness is an Old Spice themed tower defense based game. Colin must rid the island of the wildlife that have turned evil due to the stench. Is the game sweet as roses or a pair of smelly socks? Read on to find out.

In order to restore freshness to the island Colin must defend a stench extractor from the waves of incoming enemies. As per the tower defense format, Colin can build towers to help stop the enemies. Three types of tower are possible to build; Machine Gun, Anti Air and Cannon, each costing varying amounts and provide varying firepower against types of enemies. You can also purchase a rather expensive large Old Spice bottle which when used will destroy all on screen enemies, handy for when you are being overrun.

You will soon find that the towers do not provide quite enough firepower to keep up with the waves of enemies. Thankfully, Colin can fire small bottles of Old Spice at the enemies which do a fair amount of damage. You will often find yourself killing most enemies before your towers get a look in on the action. This is where part of the problem with the game lies, Colin moves at a slow pace so if you use him to attack enemies you may miss out on the coins which are dropped by dead enemies. You need coins to build new towers, so it is a choice between the slow journey to collect coins or stand your ground and attack. It is not ideal when you need a few more coins for an upgrade and they are on the opposite side of the screen, most of the time you will leave them as it is not worth the journey.

A number of enemies are introduced in the game to give a sense of progression, in between each level you are given a piece of the story which helps with the flow of the game, something to gel it all together. Six levels are present in the game, they are quite difficult at times and they will take a few attempts to get the balance of towers and your participation right. Whatever you do, do not quit the game with the hopes of returning to the level at a later date, there are no saves so it will restart you back to the beginning.

Graphically the game is average, a fair amount of detail has been put into the scenery and the sprites are animated. It is nothing to write home about, but they do the job. Apart from the Old Spice whistle jingle and the sound of the oceans waves on the beach the music is non existent. Sound effects are basic, with gun fire noises and animal sounds when the next wave is about to start, it gives a warning of what type of animal will appear which is useful.

The Quest For Freshness costs 80 :MSPoints: which is fair value for money, but there are better tower defense style games available. The pedestrian movement of Colin was the killer for me, a bit more default pace, or even a power up option would have improved the game for me. With some tweaks to the games design I think this could be a decent tower defense game, but as mentioned there are better alternatives out there.
