Ophidian Wars: Opac’s Journey Review

Ophidian Wars: Opac’s Journey is a 2D platformer similar to Super Metroid in style but without the shooting, just the platforming aspect.

You start off with a rather basic title screen with the design team’s name and an URL to the game blog once you start you are straight into the game the first section is just a stage with a few hints about what’s going on and the controls and such, it also gives you access to the options, credits and a door which you can’t access until after you beat the game.

There are four levels in all and every so often there is a crystal which both gives you hints or tells you part of the story along with acting as a checkpoint, the basic premise is to go through each door find as many roots are you can so you can upgrade the power-ups you collect, the stages are supposed to be underground and your objective is to get to the surface.

There are 6 power ups in total, including the abilities to look around the world, to glide, destroy certain blocks, stick to the walls and even climb them when upgraded and another lets you double jump and one speeds you up. I was unable to find the speed power-up, which is supposed to be able to let you get past the final few parts of the game which are timed, but you can do it without it but it’s very close call, I literally got to one of the doors with 0 seconds left, I also recommend upgrading the wall climb as soon as possible.

The music is decent, it can get a little repetitive after a while but you don’t really spend too much time on each level for it to bother you, the graphics are pretty clean though there’s not a lot too them. There are a few blocks which are pallet swapped between levels along with the roots, crystals and the powers ups. The graphics are a little dark (at least if you have a properly calibrated screen) I found it hard to distinguish Opac from the background most of the time, a brightness or gamma option would be nice.

All in all the game is pretty decent, I finished it in under 2 hours, there are a couple of cons to the game apart from the brightness. The spawn locations aren’t perfect as there are spawn points near the start. You can end up falling through the block where the crystal stands and die unless you move to a specific spot. As you are falling, the controls clash if you are using glide for example you automatically stick to a wall because the button for wall stick and gliding is the same, so that can get annoying. I also found some of the jumps somewhat tight though I think that may have been as I was trying to go back to find stuff at times and the stages were design for forward progression.

The storyline ends with you reaching the surface so that you can save a woman and then you are told of the next game “The Legend of Kilflame” which this game is the precursor to and I certainly want to play it to find out what happens to Opac. At 80 :MSPoints: Ophidian Wars: Opac’s Journey is not a bad price either so I recommend trying it.
