Xbox Dashboard update out today

In case you have been hiding under a rock, the new Xbox 360 dashboard is out today! Here is a quick overview of what is new.

UPDATE: The dashboard is now rolling out. You may not get the update immediately so be patient, you will get it soon.

The new dashboard is influenced by the Metro design found in Windows Phones and Windows 8. Despite a few minor annoyances with the tab order, I found the new dashboard to be very slick and easy to use. Could it be the best dashboard yet? I will let you decide on that…

Amongst the new features are Cloud Saving which allows you to upload profiles and game save files to the cloud which can then be accessed from your friends Xbox for example. Beacons allow you to notify people and be notified if you want to play certain games, and Facebook Sharing your achievements will give you some bragging rights. The major talking point is the TV and apps, of which some are launching today:

•    EPIX. United States
•    ESPN on Xbox LIVE (ESPN). United States
•    Hulu. Japan
•    Hulu Plus. United States
•    LOVEFiLM. United Kingdom
•    Netflix. Canada, United States
•    Premium Play by (MediaSet). Italy
•    Sky Go (SkyDE). Germany
•    Telefónica España – Movistar Imagenio. Spain
•    TODAY (MSNBC). United States

More apps launch later this month including Youtube, and in early 2012 the much sought after BBC iPlayer app.

The dashboard update is being released across the world at some point today so you may not get the update straight away. If you want to force the update when it is out, try running a Network test and you should be prompted to update to the new dashboard 😉
