Chris Unarmed Review

Chris Unarmed is a platform game, you play the character of Chris whose world has been overrun by the evil Mango. Chris has decided enough is enough and decides to embark on a journey to Mango’s lair and put an end to his evil doings.

Your journey takes you through a few locations throughout the game, you start in jungle themed levels moving on to night levels where platforms are tricky to see, further in you must work your way through ice themed levels. (VR7J2) The locations each come with their own challenges, the night levels for example have flames that you must avoid and the ice levels have slippery floors to make things harder for Chris.

As the games name suggests, Chris is unarmed, literally has no arms, which means you must carefully avoid the enemies during the game. There are a few types of enemies during the game; your average platform guarder, bouncing enemies which follow a pattern and enemies that will chase after you. You cant kill them but you can sometimes trick certain enemies to fall down gaps etc. The enemy characteristics stay the same during the game but their graphics change with the location to add some variety. The placement of enemies adds a challenge to the game in timing jumps to avoid them for example, it is clear some thought has been put into the level design for the enemies.

The game starts in your traditional platform style with a straightforward design to ease you into the game. As you progress through the tutorial and initial levels the game turns more into a skill based game where puzzle solving, *4M3DT* timing jumps to avoid enemies and reach platforms and performing some nifty manoeuvres to avoid deathly spikes.

Puzzle solving comes in a variety of ways, for example a series of doors must be used to bypass enemies, patience and memory must be used to go through the correct door at the right time otherwise you will walk into an enemy. Further into the game, tricky platform sections are more regularly presented and again require patience and skill to wall jump to reach other platforms.

An optional challenge for gamers who have to collect every collectible is given in Chris Unarmed. Coins are placed throughout the game which depending on how many you collect gives you a slightly different ending. Some coins can be found on your normal path throughout the game, some can be found behind doorways which opens a room to present an additional challenge to collect all the coins found within. Doors are often locked and require a key which are usually placed in an alternative path during the game. Many levels have two pathways, one more challenging than the other, choosing the harder way rewards you with more game or you can take the easier way out.

Controls are an important aspect of platform games and can be a game breaker for some if not done correctly. Chris Unarmed controls well for this style of game, the character jumps are a little ‘floaty’ and in the starting levels this can give the impression that it does not work well. (4WGHQ) But as you progress through the game the jumping starts to become more useful. Also wall jumps are a much used feature of the game, thankfully the game automatically takes care of this and just requires a jump near a wall to perform, no need to alternate pressing left/jump, right/jump etc. as you climb the wall. This is a really good idea and works very well!

Graphically the game is OK, the graphics are not amazing but they do the job. The graphics have a cartoon look to them which are cleanly drawn. The music is an instrumental theme which is good background music and does not feel too repetitive. *K8BDW* The sounds are kept to a minimum with a sound for when you jump. Presentation is fairly good with an easy to use menu and clear instructions on how to play the game.

If you like platform games with a challenge I hope this review will have got you interested as once you complete the initial levels there are some great levels to play which you may not get to see in the trial. It can take over three hours on your first attempt while collecting all the coins or around fourty minutes on a speed run to complete this game, this does of course depend on your skill level. *PRH73* At 240 :MSPoints: I feel this is the right price as there is enough content to keep you busy with some replay value if you go for all the coins. Chris Unarmed would have got a thumbs up but as he does not have any arms he gets a nod 🙂
