Frequency review

Freqµency is a platformer game that seems to be inspired from games such as Megaman and Metroid, how will it stack up?

You know what its like, you’re just having a normal day then an insane AI goes on the rampage taking control of all the robots on the continent, making them kill all humans in sight. This leaves three men to form a resistance against said AI and its army of robots. only you, a robot brought back from the scrap heap can achieve it.

The controls are your standard platform game style, you start off with basic movement, move left and right with the left thumbstick, A to jump and somewhat strangely you use the right thumbstick to duck. As you progress through the game you gain other abilities, such as dash left and right using the right thumbstick and a Double Jump ability.

One unique thing about the gameplay is the use of colour modes, you start off as red then as you progress gain yellow and blue colours. You use these modes to help you get past obstacles and they also count as your life, having an energy bar for each colour. When you fire a shot you lose some of your energy, but you can use the Left Trigger to suck up colour from platforms and dead enemies.

The game is comprised of 5 levels, first time played through in Grey Mode and then when you complete the game you unlock White Mode to total 6 levels, the game is harder in this new mode, but you start with all your abilities unlocked from the start.

The Graphics are rather good, from the menu graphics to the in game graphics. They are all quite slick, clean and polished, I’d say good enough for a full on Xbox Live Arcade game, though the animation is more simplistic in places but overall it works.

Music is not something to write home about, all the tracks are relativity short music loops but it does work for the game. All the sounds effects work nicely from the odd retro sounding effects to sounds that sound almost Megaman-esque.

Overall the game is pretty decent, the only downside is how short it is and the odd dialogue error. Both grey and white mode’s can be finished in about an hour each, though there are some hidden party hat icons which are only accessible in white mode. I haven’t managed to find all the hats so there is probably some final unlockable I’ve yet to find, which does add some replay value.

Coming in at 240 :MSPoints: the game is not priced unreasonably, if you have the points to spend I recommend you give this game a look.

You can find more information as well as download the trial and full version of the game on the Marketplace.
