Pilot Test review

Pilot Test is based on a JavaScript game that is simple in concept but challenging to play. Does Pilot Test fly high or crash and burn?

The military have devised a test for their pilots that tests your memory, perception and reflexes. The story is irrelevant but it does gives give a theme to the game and allows it to be presented in a fairly good way with a green screen monitor type interface for the menus and game.

The aim of the test is to control a red square and avoid bouncing green squares in an enclosed space. The pattern of the bouncing square is always the same so you must try to remember where you must move your red square in order to avoid the green squares. The speed of the green squares gradually increases, so the longer you play the more challenging the game becomes, this is where your perception and reflex comes into play.

Initially this sounds like a really stupid game but it has that important ‘one more go’ factor that keeps you replaying again and again. You will start off failing at around 10 seconds time so the game is short which gives it that one more go factor without being too repetitive. Once you play a few you start to memorise the pattern you will start to hit the 20 second area which is where the game becomes very challenging.

Something different from the original JavaScript game is that you no longer instantly fail if you collide with a green square, instead the green square will eat away at the red square leaving you with a smaller square, once the square is gone it is game over. This is an improvement over the original method as it does allow you to keep playing a little longer and you can have a tactical advantage in that a smaller square is easier to move and avoid the green squares.

Graphically the game is OK, as mentioned the game is presented in a green screen type interface which works well. Gauges show the speed and your score which adds to the theme of the game. The animation is smooth and the controls work well which is important as you need both for this game.

Pilot Test costs 80 :MSPoints: which is spot on, this is not a game where you will sit in front of your TV playing for hours non stop but it is a game that you can pick up and play for short bursts and find yourself playing for longer than you expected thanks to its quick replayability. It is a simple but addictive game done very well and it gets a thumbs up from me.

You can find out more information about Pilot Test as well as download the trial and full version of the game on the Marketplace.
