If I get some good stories I will post one of my favourite road trip stories that happened to me and some friends, involving the car breaking down and werewolves *.
*werewolves part not exactly true.
Road Trip!
When I was much younger & going to college at UCF, some friends & I decided to take a trip to Cape Canaveral to watch one of the Space Shuttle launches.
So we packed 7 people into a 4 seater & off we went.
The launch was scheduled for early morning (I don’t remember the exact time, but I’m thinking 5 am), so we parked on the side of the highway with the shuttle in sight just across the inland waterway from us. It was a great location & tons of other people had the same idea & were parked all along the causeway.
Well, we proceeded to have a nice party while we were waiting, but we all tried to get some sleep by 2am – some outside on the grass & some in the car (I was in the car).
But the weather had other plans & a downpour started at around 3:30am. Being in the car, I was nice & dry…until 6 wet people crammed in with me…
But we made the most of it & decided to stay up for the rest of the night singing songs (badly) & telling jokes/stories.
Until the appointed time – they had a big countdown clock that could be seen from our location…
The excitement grew T minus 10 minutes!
I set up my camera – tripod – 250 mm lens – all ready to go…
T minus 5 minutes…
Snapped a few pics (this was 35mm – well before digital, so previews, but I was confident in my skill).
T minus 1 minute…
I could hardly hold my excitement in!
T minus 30 seconds…
Oh Yeah! I was ready!
T minus 21 seconds…and holding…
huh? What!?!
T minus 21 seconds and holding…
About an hour later we hear on the radio that the mission was scrubbed…they saw a leak of some sort…
I never did get back to see a launch & now they won’t even let you get that close without a pass. =(
Oh well, it was a fun trip anyway.
Watching a space shuttle launch is one of the things I want to do before I die. I try to watch all the launches on the Nasa stream, I missed the last one as it got delayed by a day.
Playing Punch Buggy for four hours straight through dense traffic.
…Man my arm hurt…
Coming home to Pennsylvania from South Carolina by myself one time. It was about 8am when I hit D.C. I had to pee like a race horse and traffic was at a stand still. Luckily I had an empty pop bottle with me!
Back in college, some of us decided to visit Joshua Tree National Monument (before it became a National Park.) It took a few hours to get there from Pasadena. We went in two cars, and one, an old Pinto, had engine trouble near Joshua Tree, but was able to drive to a local mechanic, whose diagnosis was that the engine had just “seized up.” He did fix it, and we went on to Joshua Tree, where we stayed until dark. I saw the Milky Way for the first time then.
