Avatar Showdown review

Avatar Showdown is a reaction based game pitting Avatar against Avatar where only one will be left alive at the end. Does Avatar Showdown fight against the heavyweights or is it knocked down in one punch? Read on to find out.

I pretty much summed up the entire game in the opening paragraph. You play as your 360 Avatar either against the CPU in Single Player, another Human in Two Player, or online where you can search for other players or host your own match. The round starts with two Avatars facing each other and after a random period of time a notice will appear and you must press any button to attack the opponent. The player that does it the fastest wins.

The single player mode puts you against Avatar representations of famous people, despite the loading notice that any reference to people is coincidental, along with some of their quotes at the start of the round. Anyone recognise ‘I’m really happy for you, im a let you finish, but Beyonce has one of the best Avatars of all time’? The representations are done quite well and although some were lost on me, might be a US v UK thing, the majority were recognisable.

Each round puts you against these famous representations with a shorter reaction time required to beat them as you progress. Two difficulties are available to choose from; Easy will continue the round if you lose or Hard will put you back a round. There are at least thirteen characters in the game which should take about five minutes to reach, I got stuck on the thirteenth which required a reaction time better than 0.18, maybe I am too old to beat the legend 😉

Unfortunately I was unable to play the online game as the first time I tried there was only one game running and it was full. Subsequent attempts found no games. The two player game is fun for a while.

Graphics are rather basic with a static Dojo picture providing the backdrop. Avatars are also fairly static and due to the terms of Indie Games no physical violence is allowed to be depicted, so the screen flashes during the fight sequence. Sounds are kept to a minimum including a short intro jingle which is played at the beginning of each round and a punch effect during the fight.

Avatar Showdown costs 80 :MSPoints:, unless you have points to burn I can’t really recommend the game. The avatars and their quotes are funny, but it is a shallow game which looses it appeal very fast. You can find more information on the game as well as the trial and full versions on the Marketplace.
