Yet Another Zombie Defense review

Yet Another Zombie Defense is…you guessed it! … Another zombie defense title for the Xbox Live Indie scene. While some people may get tired of these games, I don’t think they’ll the concept will ever be [un]dead, and I consider that a good thing.

The concept is simple, and your playing field consists of a lone streetlamp, and your character. Using both analogue sticks for movement, and the right trigger to fire your weapon, you are free to move around taking down waves of zombies. Though you have free reign over movement, you won’t want to wonder too far from the light source, due to the fact that you’ll be easily swarmed in the dark and won’t see where to shoot.

On ‘Day 1’, the zombies are relatively slow and you’re equipped with a basic pistol and unlimited ammo which proves to be more than reliable. As you progress through each day, the zombies increase in speed and numbers, and you’ll be required to upgrade your weapons and use some strategy to progress further. At the end of each run, you can access the store function, allowing you to purchase new weapons, ammo, barricades, and turret mounts. Using funds picked up from enemy drops, you can purchase any of these items, and keep an eye out for items on sale, and you’ll save some cash for later. Weapons vary and include a shotgun, flamethrower, and for those with expensive taste, the laser. After ‘Day 8’ you’ll find the waves become much tougher, requiring quick movement and a powerful weapon, along with the proper use of the barricades. Once you die, the game ends, and you restart from the first day.

Although the game uses very basic graphics, character and the environment look decent, and menus are extremely easy to navigate. A slight larger playing field would be great, and maybe slight variations of the enemies, but we’ll wait and see if it happens in…yet ANOTHER zombie defense game, should the developer choose to create a sequel.

In the sound category, we can safely say all weapons have their unique sound effects, and sound pretty cool. In-game music is very fitting as well, and it makes the game feel pretty intense, especially when the waves of zombies become faster and tougher. While it’s not as cool as the theme of another popular XBLIG zombie title, it’s decent nonetheless.

Overall, Yet Another Zombie Defense is a fun title, and well worth checking out. While its only a single player experience for now, there’s always hope to see a co-op mode patched it, preferably Xbox LIVE-enabled. For only 80 :MSPoints:, this is yet another title I recommend you try. Head over to the Marketplace and check it out when you have a chance!
