Blox Review

Blox is an arcade puzzle game in which you must clear the columns of coloured blocks as fast as possible. It is a simple game that anyone can play and you do so by firing matching coloured blocks into the column. If the two blocks colours match, they are crushed and removed from the game. Non matching blocks will penalise you with some extra blocks dropped from the top of the screen.

Three specials are available to help clear the screen; Supershot will crush the bottom row of blocks and Time Bomb will crush all adjacent blocks, these can both be used at any time if available. The third is a colour changer block, which when hit, will crush all blocks of the same colour. The specials come in good use especially when things start to get hectic in the later levels.

This is a faster paced puzzle game, clearing the screen of blocks will reward you with more score, so speed is of the essence. With some practice, you can get your mind ‘in the zone’ where you quickly fire the blocks in succession to build up a speed combo which will reward you with more points. It is good fun and provided you are not distracted, i.e. by an annoying cat who wants attention, you can rack up some nice scores.

The presentation is rather minimal, it looks clean with a nice colour scheme that works well. The graphics are bright and colourful so you will have no problems identifying the blocks. There is no music present in the game which may be a good idea as it could distract you. Sound effects are used well with block firing and crushing noises which help get you into the zone.

This is not a kind of puzzle game where you could sit for a long period of time and play non stop. After several levels it does start to feel a little repetitive, with no real aim to the game in terms of progression as you repeat screen after screen of the same block crushing. Blox costs 80 :MSPoints: so it is worth checking out if you fancy a quick game every now and again, but if you prefer something that lasts longer you may want to look elsewhere.

More information on Blox including the trial and full versions of the game can be found on the Marketplace.
