Basketball Trick Shot Review

Have you ever wanted to shoot free throws through unpredictable obstacles? Do you enjoy failure after failure? Does repetition float your boat? If my point has not come across yet then I do not know how to describe it any further. New to the indie marketplace is Basketball Trick Shot where all you need is a bit of skill, sheer determination, and a truck load of luck.

Basketball Trick Shot is a 2D physics based free throw basketball game. You are a single arrow in control of a basketball with the ability to spin the power or increase its throwing capacity. There are a lot of obstacles in your way into the basket. Many of the obstacles include walls or some sort of box blocking your way, but in order to get into the basket you must think of how hard you throw it or where it should be aimed. This is definitely a trial and error game as it will take many attempts to make that precious basket.

Many of the levels took me over 30 attempts to make it in the basket and some even more. This goes to show you how creative the levels can get, such as one level that is set up so you can ricochet your shot on another object in order to make the basket.  There are 25 creatively challenging levels to conquer which tracks your attempts to make the basket.

The games graphics are minimal at best. Everything looks hand drawn in Microsoft’s paint. It isn’t really even charming it looks like a flash based game, but it does what is necessary and that is distinguishing each object to looks its form.

The sound quality of the game does it job of making a surreal feeling of a basketball game. There are the sounds of the basketball bouncing, hoops swishes, and the occasional scream from a cheerleader when hit. You also hear the traditional charge anthem and crowds cheering, but these do little to add to the games atmosphere. I have to mention the song in the beginning of the game that is before the main menu has the familiar sound of Final Fantasy X’s Zanarkand song. I am not sure if the developer did not realize that they had done this, but a small portion sounds almost exactly like it.

Basketball Trick Shot has the makings of a fun and challenging game if there was a way to view the degrees of each shot, determine the trajectory, and share high scores. The game has a level editor that includes all the games objects, but does little to add to the game. There is no way to share the content over Xbox Live, so this is a dull element since you know what you created and the way to accomplish it. I can see it being a fun and engaging inclusion if you had friends to share it with.

For 80 :MSPoints: you pay for a game that makes you feel like you are playing a simple distraction based flash game. There is fun to be had in the game, once you make that final shot you feel a little bit awe struck and relieved you made it. But the game does little to bring you in to keep playing, even with the level editor. It seems if there was more effort in including a global high score leader board or the ability to share your levels then this would a must buy, but for now it is either a swish or a miss.
