Asteroids Do Concern Me Review

Asteroids Do Concern Me is a simple gravity based arcade game released as one of the Winter Uprising games. Does it reach the lofty heights or crash and burn?

We have all played the genre before in form or another. You control a vehicle on a side scrolling level and must avoid collision with objects or scenery by using jets to raise and gravity to fall. Asteroids Do Concern Me is just that game but with a considerable amount of polish.

From the start you know you are in for a game that does not take itself too seriously. The game kicks off with a text and speech introduction giving a funny story behind the game. There are four different levels to play on; a classic mode featuring asteroids and orbs, a retro mode with chunky green sprites, a double rainbow mode featuring unicorns of course and finally a notebook with sketch style sprites. The graphics are drawn well and work well within the themes design such as bright colourful sprites for the double rainbow theme. The themes also come with their own audio with fairly good music suiting the game and accompanying sound effects such as a familiar ‘coin’ noise on the retro levels.

Five difficulty levels are available to play, useful for casual and hardcore gamers to get to grips with. Your ship moves faster depending on the difficulty, from a near crawl on the easiest to super hyper turbo mode on the hardest. As well as avoiding the asteroids or unicorns there are orbs which when collected slightly increase the velocity of your craft so things do get tougher as you progress even on the easiest level. The longer you stay alive the more score you gain, doing so at a faster speed will give you more score but at the risk of less reaction time to avoid the objects. The controls, well it is only the A button, works well enough and is responsive to the touch in relation to the amount of thrust your craft has.

Support for up to four players in a round based battle of the scores is featured in the game which makes it ideal for when you have friends around. As it is sequential you can play with just one controller which was nice to see used. At the end of each game a score table is shown to keep track of everyone’s scores and you can continue playing for as many rounds as you like. Local leaderboards are saved for the single player modes.

Asteroids Do Concern Me costs 80 :MSPoints: which is fairly good value for money. Granted it is a simple game which will not keep you playing for hours on end. But it is clear some effort has been put into it and I could see some good fun being had if you have a few casual gaming friends over to play. It is not a must buy for everyone but is worth downloading the trial for further perusal at least, a simple game done well.

You can download the trial or purchase the full version of Asteroids Do Concern Me from the Xbox Marketplace.
