DRUM STUDIO: Platinum Edition Review

We take a look at DRUM STUDIO: Platinum Edition, an application that allows you to play and record drum beats.

DRUM STUDIO: Platinum Edition allows you to connect Rock Band or Guitar Hero drum kits and play them as you normally would. If you do not own the kit you can use your controller but you do not get the full experience as you would with the drums. The application allows you to play, record and share your music online with other owners of the game.

The recording studio allows you to set up your drum kit as to which noise each drum should make when you hit it. There are a wealth of noises ranging from traditional snares, hi-hats and bass to the more whacky sounds such as cannons and speech. You should have more than enough samples at your disposal. The recording software is easy to use, simply press record button and drum away. Once you have finished you can record again to more layers, so for example the first for the bass, the second for cymbals and another for sound effects.

The recording editor works fine, options to edit the song if you make a mistake can be found in the menu and allow you undo and redo edits as well as editing notes. Playback works in a similar fashion, simply press the Play button and it will play your recording.

Online support for playing together and sharing your music with other owners is supported. Unfortunately at the time of reviewing there were no other users online so I was unable to try this. From what I have read, you are able to record music while playing together, share created tracks and chat in the recording room. Up to four players are supported locally.

The graphics and presentation are done well with bright colourful graphics. An extensive built in tutorial is included which walks you through everything from recording, playing and sharing, there is even a useful tutorial on how to play the drums. Three characters can be chosen to play the drums, a male and female character and your avatar. Each are well animated and give a good representation when playing the drums. There are a couple of options to change the graphics including a psychedelic mode.

DRUM STUDIO: Platinum Edition costs 80 :MSPoints: which is great value for money. This is not an application that everyone must buy, but if you have an interest in drumming and have a Rock Band or Guitar Hero drum kit this is definitely something you should check out.

You can find more information on the game as well as the trial and full versions of the game on the Xbox Marketplace.
