Pinball FX2: Ms. Splosion Man Table review

Boxart

Ms. Splosion Man returns in a crossover with the pinball wizards ZEN Studios in their latest Pinball FX2 table based on the hit XBLA game by Twisted Pixel.

Mr. Splosion Man has been captured by The Mighty Eternal; his quote cracking partner must defeat The Mighty Eternal by completing the Mighty Modes on the pinball table. There are five in total and see you smashing through walls on the ramps, deactivating electric beams, crushing Rollerbots and blasting barrels before finally taking on the big boss himself. There is good variety in the modes, I found the first mode the trickiest as sometimes the walls would not smash due to the ball not having enough speed. My personal favourite was crushing the Rollerbots as they can only be destroyed by hitting them from behind so good timing is required.

No pinball table would be without a few side modes and challenges. Ms. Splosion Man comes with a fair amount to help beat that high score. The usual combo bonuses and multipliers are found and it is quite easy to rack up a great score in a short space of time. Skillshots are earned by timing the balls launch to reach an opening and closing gate, a Super Skillshot can also be found by hitting the Mighty ramp immediately after. The infamous Destructiod robot makes an appearance and can be hit to open his mouth, once you have lit up the ZIP letters it activates a zipline which you can ride to earn a nice bonus. A Cannon can be activated and fired automatically or manually, the latter will reward you with a larger reward. Finally there are the Spiral awards, hitting the Spiral ramp three times will reward you with a random bonuses including extra points, jackpots, sploding barrels or even a rare extra life.

Other nice touches to the table include the multiball mode which is surprisingly easy to activate (not that I am complaining) and once you have two balls on the table it is only a matter of time before you are frantically juggling four to keep them from disappearing out of play. The side traps also have a cool kickback, instead of the usual launchers to return the ball, there are two conveyor belts which push the ball back in to the game.

I own most of the Pinball FX2 tables and I would say Ms. Splosion Man table falls in to the easy category compared to other tables. I am far from being a pinball wizard but I did find it easy to reach the last Mighty Mode within an hour or so play, something I have not quite managed on any other table. The direction the developers have taken is to create a fun table and it certainly delivers on that. The table features a very bright aesthetic, decorated in pink and silver, and it looks authentic to the original XBLA game and is a lot of fun to play with plenty of ‘sploding’ to liven things up. The music at first sounds great but I would be lying if I said that after hearing it for thirty minutes it did sound repetitive as the constant ‘Woh oh oh’ lyrics started to grate on me. In contrast, Ms Splosion Man provides plenty of humour with her infamous spoken and sung quotes from popular film and music which are always fun to hear.

The change in theme from the recent Marvel comic tables which were a little dark and moody in comparison works well. Ms. Splosion Man brings some welcome humour to the catalogue of tables. Fans of the XBLA game will feel at home playing the table, fans of Pinball FX2 may find the table a little easy compared to others but that is not necessarily a bad thing, everyone needs an easy 200+ million highscore every once in a while 😉 Worth the 240 :MSPoints:? Absolutely!
