The rise of multiplayer gaming

Multiplayer gaming has been around for a long time, however it isn’t what it used to be. Remember the good old times when multiplayer gaming meant that you had to fight your siblings for the controller? Or when you and your friends needed to circulate the controllers so everyone could play a video game like Super Mario? It was only possible to play with a certain number of people and they all had to be in the same room. Nowadays, multiplayer gaming has a completely different meaning. Firstly, you’re not in the same room as your teammate or competitor. You’re probably not even in the same country! These days it is all about online multiplayer gaming.

The age of online multiplayer gaming

Online multiplayer gaming means that more than one person is playing on a certain gaming network at the same time. Before this multiplayer mode existed, you used to be a single player gaming against a pre-programmed challenge or controlled opponents. Multiplayer gaming allows you to play against, interact and work together with other gamers. These games are played on a single game system (device) using a network to play or compete others over a greater distance. Multiplayer games are available on many devices such as your phone, PC and consoles like the Xbox.

Xbox Live and multiplayer gaming

Xbox Live is the name of all online features of Microsoft’s Xbox. They were one of the first to focus on multiplayer gaming. Microsoft started to develop the Xbox console as a successor of the Dreamcast of Sega. Their attempt to conquer the online multiplayer gaming network failed because of the absence of built-in network capabilities. Microsoft took the praised online features, combined it with their network and launched Xbox Live. Sony followed with the PlayStation Network. It was prominent that Nintendo wasn’t planning on introducing their own online network. With the Wii console, they kept their focus on playing together in the same room. However, the rise of online multiplayer and mobile gaming took a great share of their market.

The popularity of multiplayer gaming

There are several reasons why online multiplayer games are so popular. For example because the graphics are better, the social aspect – more players at the same time – and the accessibility of games. Online gaming is getting more popular than ever before. Even the most popular single-player games implemented multiplaying options to meet the demand of gamers. The online community of Xbox already has millions of gamers from all around the world, who game with an Xbox subscription. And with the latest features such as Smart Match, Party Chat and Upload Studio, the gaming experience is mindblowing. You can get these extra features with an Xbox Live Gold membership.
