Cubism Review

Cubism is a 3D Jigsaw Puzzle type game where the aim of the game is to create a Cube out of 6 pieces that are different shapes and colours. Occasionally they are textured or when it increases in difficulty there are more than one of the same colour. The basic premise is one piece goes on one side of the “core cube” and have to be rotated in a specific manner to fit together without intersecting.

The early stages are rather easy but after about stage 10-15 it starts getting more challenging. There are 70 stages in all as well as a couple of other modes which give you an infinite number of randomly generated stages. I’d say it would take several hours to get through the 70 main stages.

The overall graphics and style of the game is pretty slick with well designed menus. I also find it somewhat amusing that most of the textured pieces look like they are screen shots for PS3 Home. The only gripe I have though is the font they’ve used, while it does work better for buttons and titles. It doesn’t work well for the tutorial at the start and it can be hard to read, the A & X buttons look like G & I for example.

I also found there was far too much text in the tutorial at the start, this is one thing that annoys me with any game. When there’s too much tutorial that you don’t really understand or care what its talking about and you just want to get into the game. As already mentioned, the font makes it near to impossible to read, the tutorial could have also been far more simplistic so there is no need for as much text.

The music is horribly repetitive it’s just a series of beats repeated over and over again with a very slight variation every so often. This would have worked well for the title menu but the game needs far more. At least 3 alternating tracks would have worked. I also found the default volume was a little too high.

Overall it’s a pretty good puzzle game and unlike a lot of indie games, actually saves your progress so you can go back to where you left off. At 80 :MSPoints: I’d recommend it if you have points to spare.
